House of Blues
You will find the famous House of Blues in the heart of downtown San Diego on 5th Avenue. Housed in the original Woolworth’s building, this club is a great place to get a good meal and hear some great Blues music. On select Sundays, they have a Gospel Brunch presented by Kirk Franklin with live powerhouse singers and popular breakfast items like chicken and waffles. Every Tuesday at 7 p.m. guests can experience some of San Diego’s finest craft beers while listening to the tunes of local up-and-coming artists. HOB doesn’t ignore big headliners either. This month artists such as Iggy Azalea and Band of Skulls will be taking the stage. Soak up everything that the Gaslamp Quarter has to offer and book a cheap hotel near the downtown San Diego Convention Center.
Humphreys Concerts by the Bay
On Shelter Island you can enjoy some of the top names in music with Humphreys Concerts by the Bay. This seasonal venue is beloved by locals and offers concerts from April to October. Some of the past concerts have included artists such as Huey Lewis, Lynyrd Skynryd and Melissa Etheridge. This outdoor venue couldn’t get more “San Diego” as you soak in some live music surrounded by the stars, palm trees, the San Diego Bay and the lights of Point Loma. Get your tickets to see Lindsey Stirling on May 13, Christina Perri on May 14, or Gregg Allman on May 18.
The Shout House
For a truly unique live musical performance, you should head downtown to The Shout House. You will get to sing along as the dueling pianos play the songs you know and love. All the staff and servers are in on the performance and will take your song request if you’re brave enough to walk on stage to drop it in their fish bowl, usually accompanied by a small tip. Be prepared for some profanity, silly dancing, good-natured embarrassment and heavy handed drinks. Parking downtown can be a drag, but if you utilize the Downtown San Diego Horton Plaza shopping mall parking garage you can get three hours of free parking until 9 p.m. with validation.
