North Park in San Diego went from a run-down residential district to an urban haven for trend setters, young families and professionals alike. The community has been spruced up throughout the years but still hold onto its small town charm, rejecting fast food outlets and similar modern chain stores. North Park is known for revamping old businesses and turning them into something magnificent. For example, the oldest surviving fire station in San Diego – located in North Park – has been transformed and now holds a gym, multiple boutiques, a craft beer tasting room and a wine bar!
North Park Main Street is a Business Improvement District (BID) located northeast of downtown San Diego with one boundary being Balboa Park and the hotels near Balboa Park San Diego. Balboa Park is considered to be the largest urban cultural park in America, which includes several museums and the famous San Diego Zoo. The goal of the BID is to bring new life and vitality to the district and to inspire the owners to restore and maintain the historic and cultural atmosphere.
Most of the main attractions are within a few blocks of 30th Street, which is a very walkable 2.5 mile area. Since the shops usually don’t open until midday, you can spend the earlier hours at the confectionery known as Eclipse Chocolate with its delicious chocolates, delightful coffee creations and eclectic brunch menu.
At lunchtime you might want to try the Carnitas’ Snack Shack with its pork-tastic delicacies or Station Tavern & Burgers, a burger and suds joint.
Later, kindly stop by the trendy new joint called Polite Provisions with cocktails in a bar styled as a pharmacy and soda fountain; or try craft beers and pizza at the uniquely-named Blind Lady Ale House. For dinner, dine at the English-style Jaynes Gastropub for foodie-friendly fare.
The boutiques are amazing. Make Good showcases handmade goods by more than 130 San Diego and Tijuana artisans. Bad Madge & Company and Progress feature vintage and resale furniture and other items including gifts. Junc Life & Style offers Colorado gifts, clothing and home accessories. Graffiti Beach Indie Boutique carries unusual eco-friendly products made in California, such as jewelry made from recycled drum cymbals and bamboo sunglass frames!
