What You Need to Know about
Parking at the San Diego Convention Center
If you’re planning a trip to San Diego and are going to a convention at the San Diego Convention Center, you’re probably wondering where the best places to park are. Located in the heart of downtown San Diego, many think that parking at the Convention Center is going to be a hassle. Fortunately, this is not always the case! The cheap Marina Inn near the San Diego Convention Center offers information about parking so you can best prepare for your upcoming trip.
The San Diego Convention Center does have its own underground parking garage onsite where you can park for $15 a day. However, if there’s a featured event taking place, rates could be as high as $25 a day. In fact, for nationally recognized gatherings such as the annual Comic Con, parking passes are sold in advance! It is also important to be aware that once parked, you cannot leave the garage without having to pay again to re-enter. Also, you also cannot park with an RV or overnight in the garage.
Off-Site Convention Center Parking in Downtown San Diego
If you wish to park at another location near the Convention Center to take advantage of a cheaper price than what the SDCC parking rates are, there are a few places that are close enough to walk from. There is a parking center just across the street on the corner of Harbor Drive and 8th Avenue, and its rates are the same as the convention center’s underground garage.
There are numerous other areas in the Gaslamp District where you can use parking meters with variable hourly rates, and there is no charge if you are parking on Sundays. Other nearby structures such as Park-It-On-Market and 6th and K Parkade offer variable parking rates, some of which include in and out privileges which can be beneficial for visitors spending the entire day downtown.
Tips for First-Time Visitors Unfamiliar with Driving Downtown
If you’re not familiar with driving in a populated city, navigating the streets can become overwhelming. Using a GPS system is always highly recommended to help ensure you are able to make it to your destination. Most travelers have GPS available to them on their phone and most rental car companies also offer systems for rent for an extra few dollars a day. Also be aware that downtown San Diego is filled with one way streets, making it important to pay careful attention to all street signs.
Other Options for Getting to the Convention Center
If you would prefer not to hassle with parking during your conference or event, public transportation is always an option. There is a bus stop as well as a light rail trolley station located right outside of the venue. Depending on where you are staying, the trolley can be an affordable and convenient way to arrive at the Convention Center.
