The Saturday Market in Little Italy
The downtown neighborhood of Little Italy is a popular tourist attraction. It is known for its authentic Italian restaurants and eclectic art galleries. However, one of the most popular events in Little Italy is its weekend farmer’s market.
Little Italy hosts the Little Italy “Mercato” every Saturday. From 8am to 2pm, the Mercato welcomes hundreds of San Diego residents and visitors. The Little Italy farmer’s market is the only place in downtown San Diego where one can find fresh produce, artisan foods and specialty items, all in one place. This anticipated weekly event takes place on Date Street, a short walk for vacationers staying at a hotel in Little Italy.
The Mercato is a fun and exciting attraction where you’ll find delicious and fresh food and a wide array of homemade crafts. The extensive variety of fresh produce beckons the many locals who come to stock up on items such as fruits and vegetables, nuts, herbs, cheeses, eggs, oils, spices, and tea. Besides the fresh produce, the Mercato highlights local chefs who hand out free samples of their specialty dishes which range from crepes to tamales.
If you’re not interested in food or are possibly looking for a gift, The Little Italy’s farmer’s market also includes vendors who sell flowers and plants, specialty gifts and pet products. With its wide selection ranging from vintage jewelry and clothing to crafts and electric bikes, you’ll be sure to find the gift you’re looking for. For your four-legged friend, there are organic treats, custom made collars and pet photographers available.
The Little Italy farmer’s market is a great way to sample some great food, enjoy the beautiful San Diego weather and experience the hustle and bustle of an Italian market. If you want to continue your exploration of this culturally distinct neighborhood, be sure to visit the museums and attend one of the various parades, festivals and celebrations that take place in the neighborhood throughout the year.
