Fun Neighborhoods to Explore around Little Italy
When staying at the Pacific Inn Little Italy hotel, you are in close proximity to art galleries, parks and some of San Diego’s most authentic Italian restaurants. After spending the day exploring the neighborhood, continue your downtown San Diego experience by meandering through one of the unique neighboring communities of Banker’s Hill, Core-Columbia and Harborview. These neighborhoods are all either a short walk or drive to the Little Italy district and give visitors a look into San Diego’s rich history.
Just to the east of Little Italy San Diego, across the 5 freeway, is the neighborhood of Banker’s Hill. Banker’s Hill derived its name because it was formerly one of San Diego’s most affluent neighborhoods. While the community was mainly residential in the past, it has recently transformed into a popular and lively district full of quaint shops, eclectic restaurants, bars and coffee houses. When walking through Banker’s Hill, visitors can enjoy beautiful late 19th century houses and architecture among more modern additions such as condos and skyscrapers.
To the south of Little Italy is the neighborhood of Core-Columbia. This neighborhood is situated along the Pacific Ocean, giving visitors and residents astounding views of both the San Diego Bay and the downtown skyline. Core-Columbia is a largely commercial community, but future condo projects are expected to attract and increase the number of residents in the area. Currently, the Core-Columbia neighborhood is best known for being home to the San Diego Maritime Museum and the USS Midway Museum.
Between the Core-Columbia neighborhood and the San Diego International Airport is the community of Harborview. From your hotel in Little Italy, the quiet community of Harborview is only steps away. Here, visitors can find cafes and restaurants and there are a handful of beautiful parks where you can enjoy the afternoon sunshine. One of the most popular parks is the Amici Park. In addition to having a children’s playground, on many days, you can watch or join in on a traditional game of bocce ball.
While these neighborhoods may not be as popular as their Little Italy neighbor, they are great for visitors looking for a relaxing and fun way to explore the downtown district.
