Coronado’s Connection to The Wizard of Oz

Coronado and the Wizard of Oz

There is a definite connection between L. Frank Baum, the author of “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” series, and Coronado. Although he created the Emerald City four years before he actually visited Coronado, the beautiful California city has been labeled as Baum’s inspiration. It has even been nicknamed the “Emerald Isle.” He definitely saw similarities between this very real island and his mental image of the Emerald City, which is what eventually drew him to the area.

Baum’s Favorite Coronado Accommodations

Baum lived in Chicago’s Humbolt Park, but he called sunny Southern California home during the winter months. After a first visit to Hotel del Coronado with his wife, they returned every year afterwards until 1910. While staying there he designed four chandeliers that still hang in the Grand Crown Room. Looking for a cheaper hotel near one author’s famous spot? Head to Marina Inn, an affordable downtown San Diego hotel located just 7 miles from Coronado Island.
In 1910 he started renting a home at 1101 Star Park Circle for his winter visits. He wrote three of the Oz series books in this house. Today, visitors can catch a glimpse of the wicked witch at the side of the home, which still stands in memory of the famous author.

Must See Spots for Oz Fans

There are many places where fans can explore the relationship between Baum and Coronado. The Coronado Museum of History and Art has three of the author’s first edition books on display. Coronado Public Library is decorated with large glass panels depicting scenes from The Wizard of Oz, and Coronado Touring offers historic walking tours related to Baum and his time spent here. The 1906 Lodge even has a Wizard of Oz themed room called the Author’s Study. Baum himself never actually stayed in this room, but his great grandson has.

Whether you’re a Wizard of Oz fan or are just looking to enjoy San Diego in the summer, now is the time to start planning your Southern California vacation. Grab an affordable hotel near Little Italy if you’re looking for top dining, nightlife and museums and head to Coronado for an adventure-filled day trip.
