San Diego can be one of the most exciting cities in the world to visit, but it can also be one of the most expensive. So if you’re looking to save money while still painting the town red and experiencing San Diego’s nightlife scene, we have some must-read tips for you. If you’re ready to hit the bars and clubs while sticking to your budget, the trick is to find the city’s hosted bars and VIP hook-ups where party people can score a free cocktail, no strings attached.

If you do not already know about Hosted San Diego, then you should familiarize yourself with their twitter page and other social media resources. They always have new deals with some of the best hot spots in San Diego to provide tourists and locals alike with free drinks.

These promotions are done in tandem with liquor companies who are looking to make a great impression with the highflying, jet setting clientele that come through San Diego on a consistent basis. Companies such as 619Vodka have been known to host events at swanky and popular hotels such as the Hard Rock San Diego and the Seven Grand Hotel. These hosted bars typically require that you sign up for their VIP email list online in order to receive the 1-2 hour hosted bar. For those unfamiliar with “hosted bars” – this is a designated time frame where bar goers can receive free drinks, on the house.

Be sure to keep up with the Hosted San Diego twitter page @HostedSanDiego. Stay on the lookout for promotions at your favorite bars and clubs because it is likely that you will be able to get other deals directly on their websites as well.

marina-beer-tour-blog

Plato once said, “He was a wise man who invented beer.” We agree. Experiencing a city’s craft beer is a great way to immerse yourself in a small niche community while mingling with friendly locals. San Diego has quickly turned into one of the craft beer capitals of the world, with people traveling far and wide to taste some of the these hop-filled suds. If you’re a brew lover, don’t be shy about taking a San Diego beer tour to experience the city and meet some fascinating people.

La Jolla Wine Tours Beer Train

Climb aboard the best train around: the Beer Train! The train will take you along the coast of San Diego where you’ll get a chance to visit some of the area’s best breweries. Tours begin at 12:30 pm downtown and end around 5:30 pm, meaning you get five solid hours of beautiful San Diego coastline and five hours of tasty beer. The tour includes about one mile of guided walking tours to go over the area’s history. Enjoy an authentic and tasty brewpub lunch to fill your tummies before you sample the myriad of craft beers that you drink on the train! Tickets are just $89 each, plus a $12 train ticket per passenger. Grab your cheap San Diego Convention Center hotel room at Marina Inn, conveniently located just a few blocks from the downtown San Diego trolley stop.

Scavengers Beer Adventure

Scavengers offers a variety of tours, allowing you to customize your beer tour to your liking. The Saturday Beer Safari ($99-119) takes you around town in a not-so-subtle Swiss Military Vehicle to tastings at three craft breweries and delicious hometown favorite, Phil’s BBQ. You’ll also get a tasting glass with the Scavengers’ logo. The Captain Seabirds Beer Exploration takes you to three craft breweries and taprooms, provides pizza for lunch, and a free souvenir glass with a Seabirds logo. Guests also get to go on a tour of the Oceanside Harbor areas. Private tours are also available for a little extra cash.

Brew Hop

Enjoy “great friends, cold beer, and a hot ride” with Brew Hop tours. This company will talk to you personally so you can design the best tour for your visit. Make Your Own Gaslamp Pub Crawl

marina-pub-crawl-blog

The sixteen and a half block development in downtown San Diego dates back to the mid 1800s when it was the center of “off color” entertainment for sailors and fisherman. Today, the large number of historic buildings have been restored and re-purposed as restaurants, shops and bars. The Gaslamp Quarter has San Diego’s largest concentration of bars, and it’s the ideal place to experience the world famous San Diego nightlife.

You can design your own pub crawl, and experience the best of the Gaslamp all day long. Book your cheap downtown San Diego hotel and be sure to hit up these five bars when planning your DIY Downtown pub crawl:

Need an eye opener? The Star Bar at 423 E Street opens at 6 AM. Often referred to as “the best dive bar in San Diego,” the Star Bar has cheap pours and busy pool tables. The friendly bartenders accept cash only, but there is an ATM on site. This is a great place to talk to bar regulars with colorful stories of “the good ‘ol days.”

The Taste and Thirst probably has the earliest happy hour in San Diego, with bottomless mimosas until 2 PM and a delicious breakfast menu. Their more traditional happy hour runs from 3 PM to 8 PM with half price drinks and half off selected appetizers.

Dick’s Last Resort will provide you with a bar experience like no other. A 3PM – 6PM daily happy hour brings great prices on appetizers, select bottles and drafts. Try the deep fried alligator bites or a bucket of wings. Dick’s, located at 345 5th Avenue, is not for the sensitive type. Servers and staff are known to playfully pick on customers, throw straws and wait tables with sarcastic sense of humor in tow.

A favorite with locals, Hennessey’s at 708 4th Avenue, has a happy hour that runs from 4 PM to 7 PM. A $5 bill can get customers well drinks, wine by the glass, jumbo drafts and their famous Irish coffee. Appetizers are only $5 as well, and they offer a great selection of Buffalo chicken bites, Teriyaki chicken skewers, and meatball sliders. If you’re hungry later, swing back to this location as Hennessey’s has the only kitchen in the Gaslamp open until 1 AM.

Wrap up the night with tequila, tacos, and tunes at La Puerta, at 546 4th Avenue, open until 2 AM daily. Hand crafted cocktails with the freshest ingredients and juices are the pride of La Puerta, and they take the same approach and pride with their food menu which includes street tacos, tortas, burritos, and their very special “Surf and Turf fries.”

No matter your taste in food, beverages, or entertainment, a do-it-yourself pub crawl will give you an insider’s experience of San Diego nightlife. You can either map out your destinations in advance or start at your cheap San Diego convention center hotel and work your way north through Downtown’s 4th and 5th avenues.

For a cheap hotel located near downtown San Diego nightlife, call Marina Inn & Suites at 1-800-571-2933. We offer AAA, AARP and military discounts and have pet-friendly room options for your furry travel companions.

San Diego Craft Beer News: March 2014

Craft Beer Events San Diego

The craft beer scene in San Diego is undeniably amazing, drawing in beer enthusiasts from around the country! Every month there are amazing brewery events and this month is no exception. Read on to discover what’s new in the world of San Diego craft beer.

Bagby Beer Co. has already got it in the Bag

This brand new Oceanside brewery has just begun the process of building and remodeling. While they’re not slated to open until the end of the year, they’re already attracting a lot of attention. In January, right after starting construction, they woke up to find their brand new building covered in graffiti. What did they find written on it? “Cancer Can’t Kill Me” sprayed in giant blue and yellow letters. However, once owners Jeff and DandeBagby discovered the story behind the mural they decided to keep it as a tribute. The taggers were friends of a man named Kenny, who was living out his last days with terminal cancer. Not only did the Bagbys decide to keep the mural as a permanent installment, but they also hosted a small memorial after Kenny recently passed.

Waypoint Public kicks off their Brewery Series

Waypoint Public, a newish bistro and beer bar in North Park, is kicking off their new beer dinner series this week with Lost Abbey. The 9-course dinner will be paired with specially made Lost Abbey beers and seating is limited to 25 people. If you don’t make it this week, count on making reservations for one of their other six scheduled dinners through September. This highly acclaimed San Marcos Brewery will be celebrating its 1st Birthday this weekend with lots and lots of delicious beer. Their 1st Anniversary Party will take place this Friday and Saturday and their tasting room will be closed off to everyone except party ticket holders. Your ticket it good for one five-hour brewery session where you can drink up your ten 5oz tasters and then go home with limited release, hand bottled 22oz beer.

Beer & Food Pairings at SDMM BEERology

The San Diego Museum of Man has been showcasing one of man’s finest achievements over the past few months: beer. The beer exhibit, called BEERology, is running now through the end of summer. Not only do you get to learn about the history of beer but you can also taste various local brews at their tasting events. The next get-together is on March 20th for “Flavors in Harmony: Pairing Beer and Food.” Peruse the museum with a pint and learn how to match your dinner menu with the best brew.
